Global separation technology producer, Eriez, is entering the food processing market with its Salient Pole Rare Earth (SPRE) drum line. The product has been successful in the mineral processing and recycling industries, and will now be optimised for food manufacturers requirements.

Eriez’s SPRE drum separators use neodymium or samarium-cobalt rare earth magnets to create a strong magnetic field of up to 6000 gauss, which removes foreign metallic contaminants from product flows.

The SPRE drum has been initially used in food processing in Nicaragua, at Comercializadora de Mani (COMASA), a peanut company. COMASA installed 14 SPRE drum separators at its Chinandega plant, reducing reprocessing time and maintaining food quality standards.

Eriez’s sales manager Magnetic Separation, Chris Ramsdell, said that beyond extracting magnetic impurities from ore streams and recyclables like plastics and metals, the SPRE drum separators are now widely used to safeguard food products against metal contamination.

“This ensures consumer safety and product integrity for food processors like COMASA,” said Ramsdell.

The arrangement of magnetic poles on the drum surface creates distinct fields, enhancing the efficiency of material separation. As the drum rotates, magnetic particles are attracted to its surface and subsequently removed.

The durability of rare earth magnets allows for long-lasting operational efficiency, making these powerful drums a reliable choice for food processors.

Packaging News

In a collaborative effort, Kimberly-Clark Australia and Woolworths have successfully completed a packaging trial aimed at eliminating the use of secondary plastic packaging for Viva paper towels. The initiative, now set to become standard practice, is projected to save 15 tonnes of plastic annually.

John Cerini has stepped down as CEO of Pro-Pac, with Ian Shannon, who was chief operating officer of the company, taking over the role, and becoming managing director.

Sustainable packaging achievements were recognised at the APCO Annual Awards in Sydney last night. The event celebrated organisations, and individuals, driving change towards the 2025 National Packaging Targets and beyond. PKN was there.
