The Australian Institute of Food and Science Technology (AIFST) and Food Innovation Australia Ltd (FIAL) have co-produced a printed and interactive online map of the Australian food industry in what they say is the first of its kind.

The map, which will have its first airing at AIFST's foodpro stand (D20), was created to provide an easy to use and accessible centralised database.

The pair said they spent the past six months gathering data from databases, magazine directories and other sources on companies and associations to produce the map.

According to its creators, the Australian food map will provide the industry with an interactive way of “connecting, networking and reaching out to a widened availability of services”.

All organisations and companies within the industry have been labelled on the map, which spans the industry from the farm gate to the end product, but excludes agriculture and food service.

The map is split into nine food industry categories including ingredients, associations, and manufacturing.

The Australian food map will be launched in August when a printed version will be mailed out with the August/September edition of Food Australia, and an online version will be available shortly after.

Foodpro and AIFST Convention attendees will also be able to see and interact with the map which will be showcased at the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre from 22 to 25 June.
