Choice launches new weapon in free range egg campaign

Choice has launched a new free augmented reality app that it says will help shoppers avoid dodgy free-range eggs in the supermarket.

The consumer group launched the Free Range Egg Detector App following a decision last week by consumer affairs ministers to sign off on a national standard for free-range eggs that has no requirement for hens to go outside and allows a stocking density of up to 10,000 birds per hectare.

Choice has been strongly campaigning for a free-range egg standard that ensures chickens go outside and have a maximum outdoor stocking density of 1,500 hens per hectare.

Choice head of media, Tom Godrey said the app would “make labels tell the truth, even when the government won't require it”.

Viveka Weiley, Choice's 'head of new things' said: “Choice has done the research so we know which eggs are fair dinkum. Just download the free app for iPhone or Android, point your device at the label and let the 3D chooks tell the story.”

Consumers can download the CluckAR app here.

ACOR is calling on the Government to urgently introduce packaging reforms or risk the collapse of Australia’s plastic recycling sector and face millions of tonnes of plastic waste polluting the environment.

As 2025 draws to a close, it is clear the packaging sector has undergone one of its most consequential years in over a decade. Consolidation at the top, restructuring in the middle, and bold innovation at the edges have reshaped the industry’s horizons. At the same time, regulators, brand owners and recyclers have inched closer to a new circular operating model, even as policy clarity remains elusive.
