Choice launches new weapon in free range egg campaign

Choice has launched a new free augmented reality app that it says will help shoppers avoid dodgy free-range eggs in the supermarket.

The consumer group launched the Free Range Egg Detector App following a decision last week by consumer affairs ministers to sign off on a national standard for free-range eggs that has no requirement for hens to go outside and allows a stocking density of up to 10,000 birds per hectare.

Choice has been strongly campaigning for a free-range egg standard that ensures chickens go outside and have a maximum outdoor stocking density of 1,500 hens per hectare.

Choice head of media, Tom Godrey said the app would “make labels tell the truth, even when the government won't require it”.

Viveka Weiley, Choice's 'head of new things' said: “Choice has done the research so we know which eggs are fair dinkum. Just download the free app for iPhone or Android, point your device at the label and let the 3D chooks tell the story.”
