Ferrero has set new targets to reduce its carbon footprint by 2030 as it reaches 100 per cent sustainable cocoa supply.

Using 2018 as a base year, Ferrero plans to reduce Scope 1 and 2 two emissions by 50 per cent globally by 2030. It will also reduce Scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions intensity by 43 per cent per tonne of product produced globally, it said. 

The targets have been validated by Scienced Based Targets Initiative (SBTi) in December 2020. 

The company’s sustainability platform is based on four pillars: protect the environment, source ingredients sustainably, promote responsible consumption and empower people. 

Ferrero’s CEO Lapo Civiletti said meeting their target source of 100 per cent sustainable cocoa has been a proud moment. 

“We have now extended the target to include outsourced chocolate to provide full transparency of our cocoa supply chain. We continued to source 100 per cent RSPO certified segregated palm oil and we are developing a transition roadmap for the newly acquired companies toward our responsible sourcing standards,” said Civiletti. 

The Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO) was established in 2004, an initiative to promote the growth and use of sustainable palm oil through global standards and multi stakeholder governance.

In 2020, Ferrero was 82.9 per cent towards completing their 2019 target of all its packaging being 100 per cent reusable, recyclable or compostable by 2025.  

As a step towards its carbon reduction goals, in FY20, Ferrero purchased 100 per cent green electricity for its manufacturing plants in Europe in. It now has 71.5 per cent of electricity purchased globally from renewable sources.
