After more than 30 years of producing his annual guide to Australian wines, the Halliday Wine Companion, James Halliday stepping back from running the title. Wine expert Tyson Stelzer will step into the newly created role of chief editor.

Halliday will continue to write for the Halliday website, magazine and guide and be involved in the annual Halliday Wine Companion Awards.

Stelzer has almost 20 years of industry experience as a reviewer, writer, judge and presenter, said it was a “tremendous privilege and enormous responsibility” to take on the role.

Halliday said the decision was an extension of decision to share the load of the guide with five other panellists on the tasting team.

Halliday said: “It’s been apparent to me there has to be someone who can commit a great deal of time and effort to it. This is more than just being a panellist – it’s been obvious that someone has to step into the role of editor, and I’ve said from the outset that Tyson almost self-selects.

“I am excited for this new chapter in my career and look forward to leading new initiatives to support the local wine industry while continuing to share my love of fine wine.”

Last year Halliday co-founded a digital wine business, Junovate. The advanced tech conversational wine assistant aims to make it easier for people to explore wines in Halliday’s annual Top 100 and find personalised recommendations. A 2020 version of Juno is planned for this year’s Top 100.

James is reflective, but also excited about the changes. He said: “It’s been a long road with many, many wonderful moments. Always stimulating, always challenging, but it’s time that I step back.

“I welcome Tyson to the chair, and I know he’s going to do a wonderful job. All of these exciting developments have my unqualified support.

“Every change is a beginning, and I’m excited for this new chapter.”

The annual Halliday Wine Companion is recognised as the industry benchmark for a definitive guide to Australian wine. Each year, the Halliday tasting panel reviews more than 9000 wines, releasing comprehensive wine ratings, tasting notes and winery reviews throughout the year, plus articles, news and insights across the magazine and website.

Wine Victoria chair Angie Bradbury said: “James is an absolute force of nature and has had, and will continue to have, an enormous positive influence on Victorian wine at home and abroad. His commitment to storytelling and sharing the depth and breadth of our incredible industry is something I know that everyone connected to wine recognises and applauds.”
