Pneumatics provider, SMC Corporation, is constructing a new technical centre in Japan to produce its smart automation solutions for the Asia Pacific region. The company is highlighting its thermo-chiller offerings, as one of the most popular ranges.

SMC’s new technical centre is set to open in Autumn 2025, in the Kashiwanoha Smart City in Japan. It will be equipped with research and development facilities and strengthen cooperation with the other SMC technical centres around the world.

SMC Corporation Australia and New Zealand product marketing manager, Ming Liu, said that the company has consistently placed an emphasis on R&D since its founding in 1959.

“As it stands, SMC has five technical centres in Japan, China, US, UK and Germany to provide product developments and technical support to more than 80 countries, globally, ” said Liu.

Keeping industry cool

Looking to the company’s range of smart automation solutions, Liu featured SMC’s thermo-chiller offerings most prominently.

“Spurred on by the need for precise temperature control and the demand for water-saving solutions, SMC’s chiller range has continued to grow in popularity across a wide range of applications such as food processing, packaging lines, laser machining, arc welding and the cooling of die, among others,” he said.

“Industries making use of heat generating devices such as machine tooling, printing and packaging are at risk of high rejection rates, poor product quality and a lack of overall process reliability, and this is where the thermo-chiller comes in.”

A thermo-chiller uses temperature controlled circulating fluid to regulate a heat source in both facilities and equipment, and it comes in an array of sizes to maintain precise temperature ranges.

With the ability to improve product quality and protect equipment, accurate temperature control is essential to increasing workplace productivity, and SMC’s products are available quickly in the ANZ region.

“SMC stocks a large range of chillers and spare parts in Australia and New Zealand, and next day delivery is available from SMC’s national warehouses,” said Liu.

SMC’s range includes an Environmentally Resistant series (HRS-R), Standard series (HRS), Rack Mount series (HRR), Inverter series (HRSH), and Peltier-Type Thermo-con/Compact Type (HEF), all with specific capabilities to fit different industries and scales of manufacturing.

“We continue to introduce new innovations to the range. This includes an environmentally resistant thermo-chiller with an IP54 rating and a metal panel for protection against dust and water,” said Liu.

“We also offer a rack mount type chiller for space savings; an inverter type for energy-savings, with a large cooling capacity of 28kw; a low temperature type to support temperatures as low as −10°C and a dual channel type designed specifically for laser cutting machines.”

The company’s thermo-chiller solutions range from standard to triple inverter type chillers, which can adapt to the variable heat and flow requirements and achieve power savings of up to 53 per cent.

Packaging News

In a collaborative effort, Kimberly-Clark Australia and Woolworths have successfully completed a packaging trial aimed at eliminating the use of secondary plastic packaging for Viva paper towels. The initiative, now set to become standard practice, is projected to save 15 tonnes of plastic annually.

John Cerini has stepped down as CEO of Pro-Pac, with Ian Shannon, who was chief operating officer of the company, taking over the role, and becoming managing director.

Sustainable packaging achievements were recognised at the APCO Annual Awards in Sydney last night. The event celebrated organisations, and individuals, driving change towards the 2025 National Packaging Targets and beyond. PKN was there.
