The Gatorade sports drink range from PepsiCo now comes in a new formulation that contains less than two percent sugar.

The low-sugar product, called G2, has been scientifically designed to provide low sugar fuel for workouts along with electrolytes to help replace what is lost in sweat, its maker says.

”G2 is an exciting new addition to the Gatorade portfolio. We now have a range of fuel to meet your needs, depending on your level of exercise intensity,” PepsiCo ANZ marketing manager Jamie Bruce says.

“G2 contains all the electrolytes you need, however the reduction in sugar means that one bottle contains less than 55 calories, making it perfect for those looking to reduce their energy intake.”

The move fits with a broader move by beverage manufacturers to reduce the amount of sugar in drinks, and in the sports category, Coca-Cola kicked things off ten years ago with the launch of sugar-free sports drink Powerade Zero in Australia.

The new G2 range comes available in three flavours: Glacier Freeze, Raspberry and Citrus Burst, and will be ranged nationally across all major retailers, as well as petrol and convenience at an RRP of $3.50.
