Belgian brewery, Rodenbach, has brought its latest West Flanders-produced beer to Australia, with the introduction of its refreshing, 100 per cent natural Rodenbach Fruitage.
Fruitage has a dark red colour, but its flavour is light and refreshing. This unique beer is a blend of ripened and aged ale, young ale, and 7% cherries, created through a meticulous mixed fermentation process. The main fermentation and warm maturation occur with top-fermenting yeasts at ambient temperatures (15°C – 25°C).
Secondary fermentation takes place over a two-year maturation period in oak casks, facilitated by bacterial flora (including lactic acid and acetic acid bacteria) and wild yeasts (such as Brettanomyces) present in the oak. These microorganisms initially produce organic acids, which are then transformed into fruity esters, giving Fruitage its distinctively vibrant taste.
This dark red beer is a blend of young acidified, mature acidified, and oak-matured brews. This combination lowers the acidity and extends the beer's shelf life. The long-term maturation in oak casks imparts a complex and agreeable flavour to the sour beer, giving it a refined and noble character.
Rodenbach's brewmaster suggests adding ice cubes, lime and mint to create the perfect Fruitage cocktail. They state the drink pairs perfectly with red fruits, dark chocolate, or even a fresh cheesecake.
Rodenbach Fruitage is available to purchase from Dan Murphy’s and BWS stores nationwide, for RRP$17 for a four-pack or $84.99 for a case.
