Barossa winery Krondorf has released its 2024 Collection, comprising four wines that pay homage to the region’s early European settlers and the terroir of the Barossa Valley.
The new vintage releases mark Krondorf’s fourth annual collection and include the 121 Settlers Shiraz 2020, Stone Altar Grenache 2022, Stone Altar Shiraz 2022, and Kingship Cabernet Sauvignon 2022.
Krondorf’s chief winemaker, Nick Badrice, said that with the Barossa Valley being perfectly set up for growing outstanding fruit, it’s his job to intervene as little as possible and let the vineyard sites, vintage conditions, and fruit be reflected in the wines.
“The wines encompass the 2020 and 2022 vintage seasons, two years that gave low yields but fantastic fruit quality.”
“Our 2024 collection is a snapshot of our finest wines right now while also being a celebration of the Krondorf legacy. The wines are deep, generous, and brimming with Barossa character and whilst drinking beautifully now they will continue to reward with time in the cellar.”
The village of Krondorf dates back to 1847, when a group of Silesian settlers arrived in a small hamlet in South Australia. They named it Krondorf, meaning ‘Crown Village’ in German. The 2024 collection takes significant inspiration from the region’s history.
The 121 Settlers Old Vine Shiraz 2020 pays homage to the 121 settlers who settled the village of Krondorf in the mid-1800s.
The wine was handcrafted from exceptional fruit sourced from some of the Barossa Valley's oldest vines. The crushed fruit is cold-soaked for 48 hours before primary fermentation is initiated. A 10-day fermentation on skins occurs before the wine is pressed to a mix of new and used French oak barrels where it's matured for a period of 18 months.
The Stone Altar Shiraz & Grenache wines are named after the stone altar that Krondorf’s early Silesian settlers constructed at the foot of the now Kaiserstuhl conservation park, which sits within the Barossa ranges.
Stone Altar Old Vine Shiraz 2022 was handcrafted from low-yielding old vines from sites in the sub-regions of Light Pass and Lyndoch, harvested at optimum ripeness and matured carefully in French oak casks for 18 months. This Shiraz will develop with age, with the potential to cellar until 2030.
The Stone Altar Grenache 2022 was handcrafted from two exceptional vineyard sites, and has cellaring potential to 2028. It was vinified in small-format open fermenters for seven days of skin contact to extract colour and tannins, then matured in large premium French oak casks for 12 months.
The Kingship Cabernet Sauvignon 2022 was sourced from Krondorf’s Kingship Vineyard, home to black cracking clay soils that produce quality Cabernet Sauvignon fruit. The individual parcels of fruit were vinified in small stainless steel fermenters and aged in new and second-use French oak barrels for 18 months. This wine will mature well in the cellar until 2028.
