Fresh produce business, Montague, says its exclusive apple variety, yello, is back this season, with the harvest expected to reach around two million apples.

Originating from the Nagano Research Centre, Japan, in 1983, yello is a yellow apple, a cross between a Golden Delicious and Senshu apple. It is a similar variety to a Shinano Gold; another yellow-hued variety native to Japan.

Exclusively grown and managed by Montague in Australia and its Victorian growing partners situated in Pakenham, West Gippsland, Drouin, Yarra Valley, and the Mornington Peninsula, yello is currently only grown in select areas with a limited yield each year.

They are considered difficult to grow, however, Montague and its network of growers are anticipating the total harvest to reach approximately 2 million. The business oversees more than 36,500 trees growing the yello variety, with each tree expected to yield approximately 100 apples.

The fruit is known for its complex flavour profile, blending sweetness with tropical notes.

Montague stated that customer sentiment for yello is extremely positive, highlighting the variety’s exotic aroma and features. They said that it pairs perfectly with exotic spices, ginger, curry, and chutney or with sweet-and-sour dishes as well as with veined cheeses or hard cheeses.

Yello will be available from selected greengrocers and Costco locations for a limited time until early September, or until stocks last.
