Maison Mumm is adding to its Mumm Terroirs collection with the release of its Central Otago Pinot Noir 2021, the first still fine wine of the range.
The Mumm Central Otago Pinot Noir 2021 is the second release in the Mumm Terroirs collection from this wine region, following the inaugural release of its sparkling Mumm Central Otago Blanc de Noirs NV in 2023.
The Mumm Terroirs collection celebrates wine regions known for producing exceptional pinot noir. Each of the sparkling and fine wines in the series celebrate a region’s unique terroir including Northern Tasmania, Marlborough, Central Otago and Napa California.
Made from hand-harvested Pinot Noir grapes from the Lowburn sub-region and matured for 16 months in French oak, the wine aims to reflect the land and terroir from which it hails. The world’s most southerly wine region, Central Otago has a continental climate with cool winters and sometimes frosty springs and autumns, followed by short, hot and dry summers.
This seasonal influence combined with low fertility and free-draining soils, make it the ideal growing environment for Pinot Noir, with very concentrated berries that have high skin-to-juice ratios.
The resulting wine has aromas of berries and vanilla, with a dark plum and black cherry palate, overlayed with dark chocolate and oak char to finish.
New Zealand Mumm chief winemaker, Jamie Marfell, said that the company had long worked alongside grape growers in the sub-regions to recognise the best vineyard and sites, and the 2021 vintage provided ideal conditions and fruit to produce the wine.
“Creating a fine wine rather than a sparkling wine, speaks to the pioneering and innovative nature of this collection which is dedicated to showcasing Pinot Noir at its pinnacle of quality in the bottle,” said Marfell.
Mumm Central Otago Pinot Noir 2021 is available in selected Australian venues, and online at vntnr.co, for RRP $80.
