New Australian wellness brand, Neon Tiger, is releasing Recovery Shield +, a new Australian-made and TGA-listed hangover-prevention supplement, made from traditional Asian medicinal ingredients.

Hangovers, are perhaps the world’s most common health complaint – with the average person spending nearly two years of their life nursing the aftermath according to a British study. Neon Tiger says it is on a mission to change that.

While most common hangover remedies focus on treating symptoms like headache, nausea and dehydration after the fact, Recovery Shield + claims to prioritise prevention by focusing on supporting the liver in metabolising alcohol and its toxic byproduct, acetaldehyde. The formula contains 15 ingredients, which the company says is each backed by peer-reviewed evidence supporting their role in hangover prevention and recovery.

Neon Tiger founder, Martin Matthews, explained that the key to the formula is the same primary active ingredient in market-leading hangover supplements in Asia – an extract of the Japanese Raisin Tree (Hovenia Dulcis):

“Japanese Raisin Tree was first documented as a use for alcohol intoxication in the world’s oldest pharmacopeia, the Tang Dynasty’s Materia Medica in 637AD, and has been used in Asia ever since. It’s only in the last two decades that modern science has caught up and begun to uncover how compounds from the tree, like dihydromyricetin (DHM), work to combat hangovers and protect the liver.”

“That’s the benefit of experience and wisdom. It’s rare for people to use something for thousands of years unless it actually works, even if they don’t yet know how to explain it. Neon Tiger’s vision is to uncover these powerful ingredients, while using modern science to maximise their effectiveness,” continued Matthews.

WIth a DHM concentration of 20 per cent, the extract used in Recovery Shield + is the most potent available in Australia, the company claims. The supplement also contains concentrated extracts of Korean Pear and Red Ginseng, also reportedly known for their hangover-busting effects.

Recovery Shield + also aims to take care of long-term liver health, with the addition of the amino acid Cysteine together with Milk Thistle, while ginger extract claims to soothe the stomach and reduce inflammation. An electrolyte formula and Vitamin B complex round out the formula to help the body replenish lost nutrients and rehydrate.

For sufferers of ‘alcohol flush’, commonly called ‘Asian flush’ as it affects 30-50 per cent of people of East Asian descent, Neon Tiger says it offers a lifeline. A genetic deficiency in the aldehyde dehydrogenase enzyme (ALDH2) responsible for breaking down acetaldehyde, alcohol flush causes facial redness, nausea and headaches as excess acetaldehyde builds up in the body. By supporting the activity of the ALDH2 enzyme, Recovery Shield + is designed to supplement this deficiency.
