The GlenAllachie whisky distillery has launched its inaugural peated single malt Scotch whisky brand, Meikle Tòir, in Australia, debuting four small-batch variations: The Original, The Sherry One, The Chinquapin and The Turbo.

The GlenAllachie, based in the heart of Speyside, was established in 1967 and changed ownership several times until 2017, when master distiller Billy Walker and partners acquired the it. In 2018, it produced the first peated GlenAllachie whisky and five years on, a range of peated single malts was launched under the brand name, Meikle Tòir.

The range is made using premium mainland peat producing an oaky, sweet smoke style.

Meikle Tòir, which means ‘big pursuit’, represents Walker’s relentless seasonal peated campaign to carefully craft and cask-perfect a peerless single malt collection at the Speyside home of The GlenAllachie.

As a fully independent spirit business, the team has the freedom to craft whiskies with a focus on quality over quantity. Using peat from mainland St Fergus, the peated production runs for around six weeks each year to create premium, small-batch releases.

The Meikle Tòir expressions are subjected to a lengthy fermentation time of 160 hours, nearly triple the industry average, adding a fruity, ester-rich character to the whisky. The spirit is also bottled without added colouring and non-chill filtered.

The Original is the classic single malt that champions the peated pursuit. Aged for five years in a combination of first-fill Bourbon barrels, American virgin oak casks and Rye barrels.

The Sherry One is matured for five years in American oak ex-Bourbon barrels, followed by quality Pedro Ximénez and Oloroso Sherry puncheons, resulting in distinctive flavours of dark chocolate, mocha and puffs of peat smoke.

The Chinquapin One is aged in superior Chinquapin virgin oak barrels sourced from the Northern Ozark region of Missouri, USA, and matured for five years. The single malt delivers notes of sweet spice and toasted nuts accompanied by peat smoke.

The Turbo is a limited-edition release with an amplified smoky identity. Deploying mainland peat and a lengthy fermentation period, the whisky boasts a full-bodied character.

Meikle Tòir will be available exclusively via Vanguard Luxury Brands

The AFGC has welcomed government progress towards implementing clear, integrated and consistent changes to packaging across Australia, but says greater clarity is needed on design standards.

It’s been a tumultuous yet progressive year in packaging in Australia, with highs and lows playing out against a backdrop of uncertainty caused in part by the dangling sword of DCCEEW’s proposed Packaging Reform, and in part by the mounting pressure of rising manufacturing costs.
