Shiraz remains Australia’s favourite varietal, in front of chardonnay and semillon sauvignon blanc, according to retailer Dan Murphy’s.

In the last year, 53 shiraz products were added to Dan Murphy’s stores across the country, and it also added 47 pinot noir products, despite the fact that pinot noir doesn’t currently make the top five purchased varietals for any state in Australia.

Head of Dan Murphy’s Wine Panel, Peter Nixon, says the reasoning behind the move was that the Aussie palate is in a transition phase, with more Aussies “beginning to also appreciate a more elegant, spicy glass of red as well as the full-bodied hearty styles which we are justifiably world famous for”.

Some other Dan Murphy's stats:

- Australian sparkling outsold French champagne more than five to one

- 84 per cent of all wine purchased at South Australian Dan Murphy’s stores is Australian wine

- At Dan Murphy’s, the range of Tasmanian wine increased by 44 per cent in the last 12 months
