A Sydney-based middle-eastern restaurant has become the first to introduce Egyptian beer to the Australian market.

Bekya Middle Eastern Kitchen opened at Tramsheds in Harold Park last September, and has become known for its authentic home-style dishes.

Now it will release three beers from a country whose beer brewing history dates back to the predynastic period, according to co-founder Wally Mostafa.

"I am thrilled to announce that Bekya will be the first importer of Egyptian beers in Australia," he says.

"The country only has one brewery, Al Ahram Beverages, which originally opened in the late 1800s, but the presence of beer can be traced back to around 3100 BC.

"The idea with Bekya from the outset was to provide our customers with a holistic middle-eastern experience, and the beers complete that.”

Beers include Egypt’s most famous brand, Stella, manufactured since 1897, which pours as a golden colour with a hoppy aroma of average strength; Sakara Gold, the country’s newest brand of beer produced with top brewing technologies from around the world; and Mesiter Max, a strong European beer that is produced and licensed in Egypt, with a smooth, citrus flavour.
