Good & Fugly is inviting all Aussies to take part in a nationwide hunt for Australia’s fugliest fruit and veg. The search, which runs throughout February, is a celebration of ‘fugly’ produce and aims to change unrealistic fruit and veg standards in supermarkets.

Good & Fugly launched in 2020, and after two years of creating produce boxes from excess fruit and veg, co-founder Richard Tourino says he has seen his fair share of funny-looking produce.

“We’ve had everything from three-headed eggplants, carrots with two legs, acrobatic capsicums, and wavy strawberries. But everything tastes just the same as the good-looking stuff, so we’re here to shift perceptions and raise awareness of food waste in Australia,” said Tourino.

Tourino says 25 per cent of produce never leaves the farm as it isn’t ‘pretty enough for supermarket shelves’.

“We want to change attitudes towards ‘fugly’ fruit and veg and create a bit of fun with this competition to encourage people to find and consume quirky-looking produce and for adults to actively hunt out the lone, slightly misshapen fruits and vegetables they find on shelves, in their Good & Fugly boxes, or even in their own gardens,” said Tourino.

Good & Fugly’s Hunt for Australia’s Fugliest Fruit or Veg runs from 1 February to 28 February. Entries can be submitted online; the owner of the fugliest fruit or vegetable will receive a year of Good & Fugly fruit and veggie boxes, and is eligible for a bonus Vegepod prize pack including a medium pod & stand.
