In a first for its Australian business, Mondelez International has released an economic and social report on its local operations. Through brands including Cadbury, OREO, and Philadelphia Cream Cheese, Mondelez contributed nearly $1 billion to the Australian economy in 2022, the global company’s Making the Right Impact report said.

Mondelez also announced a new 43,000 square metre manufacturing and distribution facility will be opened later this year in Truganina in Melbourne’s west.

Highlights

  • $970m of ingredients and services from Australian farmers and suppliers;
  • $187m Australian-made snacks exported globally;
  • Manufacturing investment of $402m since 2019; and
  • 90% of products sold in Australia are made in Australia.

Mondelez Japan, Australia, and New Zealand president, Darren O'Brien, said being local was important to the company and to consumers.

“We’re a global company with local roots and a national focus. Ninety per cent of what we sell in Australia is made right here across our seven plants. On top of that, much of the produce we source is Australian, from the sugar cane in Queensland, to the fresh milk from our 52 dairy farmers in Tasmania,” O’Brien said.

Since 2019, the company has invested $402 million at its seven Australian manufacturing plants – four in Melbourne, Victoria, one in Hobart and Burnie, Tasmania, and Suttontown, South Australia – on site and equipment upgrades, training, and sustainability initiatives.

Ringwood, Scoresby, and Dandenong plants use 100 per cent renewable electricity. Against a 2018 baseline, Mondelez Australia has reduced its carbon emissions across its supply chain by 62 per cent.

It has also announced a major investment in Licella Holdings to progress its advanced recycling facility using Catalytic Hydrothermal Reactor technology to create a circular economy for soft plastic waste. And is involved in the Australian Food & Grocery Council’s National Plastics Recycling Scheme trials for kerbside recycling.

The company employs 2050 people, and indirectly supports 4024 jobs across its value chain. Mondelez is also part of a number of initiatives and community organisations and events including Cadbury Women in Sport and pledging one million meals with Second Bite.
