Gelato artisans from South Australia have received a special mention for receiving the most votes from the Italian public at the international gelato comp, the Gelato World Tour.

The flavour Gorgonzola and Pear variegated with Fig and Walnuts, by Michael, Brian and Teresa O’Donnell of the Gelateria 48 Flavours in Adelaide, received a 'Popular Jury Special Mention' at the finals which were held in Rimini, Italy last week.

They tied with Pineapple, Celery & Apple Sorbetto by Taizo Shibano of Malga Gelato from Nonoichi, Japan.

50.000 visitors attended despite the rain, organisers said, with 2.500 kg of gelato produced for the event which is organised by Carpigiani Gelato University and Italian Exhibition Group Sigep.

The Gelato World Tour is an international traveling competition in search of the best flavors in the world, and 36 finalists from four continents and 19 different countries competed to be named worlds top flavour after three years of selections from more than 1800 participants.

The overall winning flavours were:

First: Pistacchio by Alessandro Crispini from Gelateria Crispini in Spoleto.

Second: Tributo alla Serenissima by Guido and Luca De Rocco from Eiscafé De Rocco in Schwabach, Germany.

Third: Amor-Acuyà by Daniela Lince Ledesma from Amor-acuyà in Medellín, Colombia.
