In a bold move to transform the Australian food industry, Openway Food Co was established by seasoned industry veterans with a mission to unite smaller Australian businesses under a single platform.

This innovative company is dedicated to sharing resources and fostering the growth of healthier food options for all Australians. Although a new player in the consumer goods landscape, Openway Food Co is already making significant strides, guided by a strong set of values that emphasise collaboration, sustainability, and community engagement.

One of its first achievements has been the onshoring of production of the brand Table of Plenty’s Sweet Rice Cakes, which were previously imported from Europe.

Over an 18-month project, the company navigated global supply chain challenges to build and deliver this initiative, creating 30 permanent local jobs and engaging local contractors. This effort not only bolstered the local economy but also significantly reduced the company’s carbon footprint by eliminating millions of shipping miles.

The Table of Plenty Sweet Rice Cakes project has delivered multiple benefits to the Australian economy and the food industry. By utilising local design and engineering resources, the project supported the construction of a state-of-the-art facility, leading to job creation and future growth prospects.

Openway is also committed to using Australian-grown rice and locally sourced packaging, further enhancing the sustainability and quality of its products.

The company’s vision is rooted in Australian manufacturing and sourcing local ingredients responsibly. Openway has established long-term commitments to farmers and plans to drive growth and collaboration with them. It supports the “Thankful for Farmers” program via its Red Tractor brand and focuses on energy efficiency and waste reduction at its Clayton South facility.

The company’s commitment to sustainability is also evident in its packaging innovations. For example, the recyclable zipform tubs used for their protein powder lines demonstrate a proactive approach to reducing packaging impact.

These efforts align with Openway’s broader goal of achieving zero waste to landfill.

In late 2023, Openway Food Co earned the prestigious B-Corp certification, solidifying its position as a leader in the Australian food industry. This certification underscores the company’s dedication to environmental, social, and governance (ESG) objectives.

The company is also focused on building its innovation capabilities, ensuring that more industrial intellectual property stays in Australia.

Openway has just signed a new national partnership with Foodbank. Through this collaboration, the company will provide better-for-you food options and plans to deliver four million meals to those in need via its Red Tractor Oats by Winter 2024. Beyond product donations, Openway is launching a volunteering program to further support Foodbank’s initiatives.

The company boasts a diverse and inclusive workforce, with 56 per cent of employees being female – an unusual achievement in the manufacturing sector. The team also represents a wide range of nationalities and ages, creating a dynamic and innovative work environment.

With a solid foundation in place, Openway Food Co is poised for growth. The company plans to extend its lease at the Clayton South facility, with support from the Victorian government, to drive further investment and capability over the next three to four years. Openway’s platform is designed to welcome more Australian brands and businesses, fostering a collaborative model that benefits the entire food industry.

All shareholders and board members are aligned with Openway’s vision, and the leadership team can invest in the company, ensuring alignment and sustainable decision-making. This innovative business model aims to attract and retain top talent, positioning Openway as a trailblazer in the Australian food industry.

Openway Food Co is not just building a business; it’s creating a movement toward a more sustainable, collaborative, and healthy future for Australian food manufacturing. With a strong commitment to local resources, community support, and environmental responsibility, Openway is setting a new standard for the industry.
